Vocalist and improviser Will Hewett explores the language of sound beneath words. After singing 15 minutes every day for a year, Will Hewett describes--and sings--what he learned about commitment and the ability of a simple creative practice to open us to vibrancy, and to a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us.

Some extracts:

My whole concept of time turned inside out This practice became like a generational center of my day. It was like a fire, hoooooo, that the rest of the day gathered around.

Listen to the singing world around me and find my part on it. Something it was like if the world was singing so fully that there was nothing from me to add.

I sang whatever showed up. Most times sounds in made up languages.

I got to travel every day into the world beneath words: the world of colour, of life, of vibration, of motion, a world that has no borders, no countries, and for me it feels like swimming. And I think we all know this world. I think our bodies are experiencing it all the time, they´re experiencing it right now. We just tend to cover it up with a layer of words, ideas,.thoughts about who we are or who we should be. But words are really flemsy messengers for the fullness of the experience. And singing can bring us here.

So my simple hope is that we´ll just sing more, that we´ll sing our way into the world of our bodies and the body of our world. That feels more important than ever.

You can start it´s easy. You can just start humming...

Time bows to authentic commitment and it stretches to accommodate it.

From Circus to the Circle

Matilda Leyser is, as far as I know, part of Improbable, a Theatre company ran on Open Space... or something. I was lucky to see her in Wosonos Berlin 2010, inviting us so graciously and wholeheartedly to London for WOSONOS 2012. They are also inviting us to

I dropped in this older beautiful gem accidentally. What else could I do than bring this story here? OSLIST is a true treasure. Whenever I visit it I feel so grateful!

Hello all, and a bow to Harold.

I wanted to let the list know that I facilitated my first large open space on Saturday - for Circus! I have done several little ones (and many involving just me and Phelim and some
Monkeys!) but this was the first one I had held for a big group. About 130 people.

Before I met Phelim I worked as an aerialist (trapeze artist) for ten years. Meeting Phelim and encountering Open Space all formed part of my climbing back down to the ground- it made earth seem more appealing. I have been earthbound now for 3-4 years so it was a wonderful and big thing for me to bring my learning since leaving the circus world back to that community.

There was a fantastically diverse turn out: students and elders, traditional and contemporary circus were all represented.

A sample of session titles for you:

-Circus can't tell a story?
-What's the best trick you've ever seen?
-Why do we never feel good enough?
-The space between 10 minutes and 1 hour
-If circus gets well funded and organised where will all the freaks and weirdos go to play?
- corporate whore v serious artist?

And many others....

People asked 'can we do this again?' in closing circle. My first ever aerial teacher who must surely be approaching 70 said he felt re-inspired and I had to hold it together.

Lastly I would like to share what helped me at the start when I felt most terrified. Phelim told me to walk the circle ten times slower than I thought was slow and that reminded me of the last aerial piece I made: it was on a cloud swing (a rope swing) and I spoke during it and described what it felt like. It began with a haiku that went like this:

Oh snail,
Climb Mount Fuji
But slowly.

After reciting that to the group and walking a slow circle, it turned out it was a smooth downhill slide all the way as everyone got on with it - seasons, marketplace, work....

What are we going to do about theatre?

This February will see the 7th Devoted and Disgruntled annual event.
D&D was born out of an invitation I made back in January 2005 because I was frustrated with the theatre world I worked in not being all that great at communicating with itself. I wanted to improve that, to find new ways for us to connect to each other and bring about change.

Now, 7 years on, in these times of economic scarcity it is more important to me than ever to maintain a space that is open for possibility and optimism, a space which engenders a depth of discussion and creativity other events don’t give. D&D is not just about debate, it’s about authentic conversations: a place where we can be surprised by as yet unimagined solutions, relationships and creative collaborations. D&D provides a genuine opportunity to follow impulses, find support, gain new insights, share knowledge, make things happen.

I want to invite the people who have never been before, the people that come every year, the people that keep on meaning to come and never quite manage it, the people that came once and thought that was that, the people that have come to one of our D&D Satellite events and never been to the big annual one.

Improbable will again open and hold the space for this event but it isn’t our event. D&D belongs to the people that turn up, to the community that has grown over the last 7 years and continues to grow.

D&D is not designed for any particular sector of the theatre community, simply for those who choose to turn up. It’s your event, open to anyone. So this year I’m inviting you to make an invitation and to publish it here.

Every issue of concern to anybody will have been raised, if they took responsibility for doing that. All issues will have received full discussion, to the extent desired. A full report of issues and discussions will be in the hands of all participants. And YOU will have taken part in making it happen.

I heard one time that love is detatched from possession, that it´s deep inside oneself and it irradiates, not depending on others´ feelings. Not being at all and interchange,... The other night, out for some beers, speaking with someone I met first time, this piece (a big hit some years ago that I didn´t hear for years) started to sound, it was her favourite one, and had been played to please her... I thnaked her so much for taking it back to my life, but, as usual with songs in other languages, I picked just a little piece of the lyrics. I just searched for them. Wow, this kind of message is something I really appreciate now!

WHAT ABOUT ON-LINE OPEN SPACE?

Annette Zera asks on the OSLIST... "I've been asked if it is possible to run an *online *Open Space eventfor 500 people. I haven't a clue. Can anyone help? I pick some pieces from the answers here.

Sure, we all prefer to open space in an atmosphere like the one in this photo :-)!... but sometimes an online OST meeting might be required too!

Currently in one single OpenSpace-Online conference 10-125 participants can work completely selforganized in a solution-oriented and high data-protected 4hour step-by-step open space workshop process. If a larger group wants to invite more than 125 participants, we can easily arrange a set of X simultaneous OpenSpace-Online conferences for hundrets or thousands of people - e.g. with exact the same main-theme/-question. In all cases our system produces an extensive just-in-time conference documentation (digital) at the end of the conference for immediate selforganized further work. For something specifically Open Space - OpenSpace-Online has a virtual facilitator (a lovely character that welcomes and invites you, explains the principles and law), beautiful simple graphics that give the body-sense of sitting in a circle together, a virtual wall upon which to post topics, the ability to bumblebee from group to group, butterfly over to a 'cafe' and also have side butterfly conversations, and the output of a full Book of Proceedings printed out at your own desk. And you don't have to know anything technologically to do it - there is great support during the real-time of the online conference but most of it is completely intuitive to the participants.

Gabriela is an Open Space facilitator and she field-tested her design over several years with many of us Open Space folks. Though text-based - as we know, there is nothing exactly like a group being together in person - it is amazingly close to the in-person feeling, because of its thoughtful design, visuals and options for any participant to self-organize into wherever they want to go, to write ('speak') or simply to wander amongst the conversations and witness.

I met Tova in Wosonos Berlin 2010. She shared some days ago on the OSLIST the way she knew about OST and her views. What a brilliant explanation of Open Space!. Here some lines from the TED page and some words on it by other people on the list

Tova has been an Organization Development consultant for 30 years, teaching in the graduate program of Tel Aviv University's business school. The heart of your talk for me was in these words at about 16:30 in:
“we've achieved a lot; we are in the growing business of making social living systems and not mechanical system. In mechanical system, we must start with clear goals and clear vision and clear objectives and we proceed to get them. In a living system we are preoccupied with being and belonging before we set objectives. A living system will try to root itself, preferably in nourishing environment, and to take time to make sure it's alive before it figures out its destination, and before the horizon is clear.”

This clarifies something I have never been able to put into words and metaphors before. It carries the thought further, and tells us what OS and all true conversation and meeting (see the work of Martin Buber) is about: birthing a living system.

This is a step off into wide open space...and we find solid ground beneath our foot. Anybody want to take this another step?

A write-up of the description of open space given by Tova at the TEDx talk:
We are trying to create an infrastructure for human interaction to take place, mainly face to face but also could be virtual, to create organizations that are living systems, not mechanical systems.

Now how do we work in open space? What kind of principles or ways of conduct do we use, that make it possible to come as fully me and yet in the same time to be totally open to others, to all sorts of others, to create a collective we.

From all the methodologies that I know that are opening space I could draw up seven principles or ways of conduct. They are weary simple.

1. You are invited, you don't have to come, but you are invited.
2. You are included, and what makes you included is that you wish to come.
3. You are the right people, no shame, no blame, you are perfect the way you are.
4. It is all done by self organization, no one is telling you what to do, you are making it happen, creating the agenda, etc.
5. Transparency, we do it all in transparency so we can build on the wisdom, of one and another, of layer by layer.
6. We encourage and invite simultaneity and multi version, it dose not have to be in sequential or linear logic, it happens all at the same time, it is great!

7. You are free at all times to be mobile, and let your legs carry you to where your heart and mind wants to be

If we are getting or putting people together and we do not insist that they must agree, then they don't have to fight and compromise. And if we take people and we allow them to move freely, that means that people can self regulate and if they had enough and they feel that the emotion is arising and they can not control it, they can go somewhere else, they can self regulate themselves and they feel no constrain. And in this way of work where individuals can be fully themselves,
they become, as I can see, fully alive, and create collectives that are living systems and not mechanical or machine like systems.

Thanks for this lots of great things to consider.

And prompts lots of thoughts for me...

As we begin to explore how technology links us up ( and as someone who is slightly geeky I enjoy those possibilities) I also find myself fascinated how often something like Suzanne's simple reports bring me closer than being able to view something through a camera like a security guard! Perhaps more interesting than this would be a booth where people can go give personal reports at specific times.

I'm thinking out loud here so..

I can hear lots of different sides to this...

Whoever comes are the right people.

Whoever went are the right people.

Sometimes we have to accept we didn't make it there.

A live feed doesn't always "feed", isn't always nourishing and also shouldn't mean we can expect to be fed!

Being able to see a little bit makes us think they should be thinking about us more? Makes us want to be part of a party we didn't make it to?

I think perhaps for those not there.. the communications that happen "Live" are less about information out... Than information in. What I mean for example is.. "Twitter" (and I know you say you don't like it) has really changed our D&D events by providing a stream of information and support from the outside world into the space. It has let the people at the event know there are people elsewhere thinking of us and proposing ideas. You aren't there but you can get messages in to people from outside.

The twitter stream only seems to take off internally when the people who use it... Use it. Often it's the younger people who it's second nature for. So in the "twittersfere" it becomes like a party people can hear next door. Then the information starts to move outward...

As ever you can't force it to happen and when it emerges it is both surprising and enjoyable. But being told to have a good time at a party and play a game you don't want to play can certainly slow down the fun happening. It's taken years for it to start happening at our D&D events but it did last year and brought a whole wave of new participants. This is like "atmospheric" communication out..

Like your being able to not hear whilst being able to see, it strangely stops us trying to imagine how we might join in the conversation.. (we can't in the same way as we are not there) but use our different senses to connect to the spirit of what is happening.

So if we go down the technology route I think the information out needs a bit more creativity and form... Such as editing and filtering so people get the feel of the event whilst accepting their live contribution will be limited because they are NOT present. This needs time and energy and the stream out is more likely to happen after the event perhaps as a next wave. Also perhaps making any kind of live OUT stream just more obvious to be used when people WANT to.

However.. rather like TV arrogantly thinking live theatre should accommodate it we should remember what makes OS special. I think we have to be sensitive to the beauty of the LIVE event. Knowing that I have cameras watching me and having to think about it can just be something that can get in the way of getting on with the important work at hand.

I think what I'm trying to say is. We shouldn't get confused by these possibilities into thinking its about people who aren't there being able to join in better! Those possibilities are about communicating more elegantly to those not there what is happening!

This doesn't mean we shouldn't have all those tools ready to be used when the new form emerges out of the energy of the group to say for instance.."Suddenly go live.. And talk to the world!"

Or create the wiki that can be contributed to. Etc..

We can make the edges of the system more porous but those holding boundaries of the event are what make the event important in the first place. The edge between those who came and those who didn't.

In terms of the event I know that the real out comes.. "Out-streams" are never the ones i think they are going to be. Who ever knows what ways opening space changes things? Some conscious.. Some mysterious.

I do know the interface between technology and opening space is an interesting one and trying to catch ghosts on camera is always fun!

Artur Silva makes interesting suggestions on the OSLIST for the next WOSONOS events, in order to use the Communication and Information Technologies to have more participated and productive meetings. WOSONOS 2012 will take place in London. Sure it helps!

While I wait for the fully report Juan Luis has offered I have been following the WOSonOS in Chile, from 3 sources:

(1) The marvelous messages that Suzanne Daigle is sending regularly about what happens in Chile;
(2) The very synthetic messages from Pablo at the "WOSonOS" group at the NING site (http://openspaceworld.ning.com/group/wosonoschile);
(3) The streaming available from http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wosonos-chile-2011.

[I am not following Twitter, as I don't like it...]

The streaming is interesting in many ways. I have "made time" to see the opening session and the morning (after my lunch in Lisbon...) and evening news of the second day (after my dinner). In the opening, one could see everything but hear nothing. After that, the position of the (fixed) camera has changed (thanks, Pablo) and, from time to time, I was able to understand small parts of some interventions...

It is interesting to see people moving around without hearing almost anything as in mute films or in bird watching - one can see the "dance" and that's it! From this limited point of view, I concluded that the dance was marvelous in the opening (made by Juan Luis and Karen) and not very interesting in the "Mexican Ola-like - but with shouting" (Ola meaning wave) in the beginning of the second day, and one could hear some of the interventions in the evening news.

One conclusion that I took is that people present in the event must be informed that the streaming is being done and that to be heard far from the location they must speak with the mouth close to the micro (and don't use bells near the micro...).

But a more general conclusions that I took is that if one plans to do a "Worldwide OSonOS" (and not only a "regional WOSonOS with some people from other regions" - a bunch from the USA, one from Asia and no one from Europe, if I understood well), close attention must be putted in the way to facilitate worldwide dissemination and even participation.

Please don't see my remarks and suggestions bellow as any criticism to the Chilean Host team, which is making a very good job, as I can understand from Suzanne's messages, but as suggestions for the London Host Team and for other future WOSonOS organizers.

First: WOSonOS must not be considered in the future only as a gathering of the people that are able to come to the event location, but as an event that takes place worldwide, based on a specific location, but not restricted to it. The new IT possibilities must be fully used to assure worldwide participation.
Second: there must be used a fixed camera and a mobile one, and have someone monitoring what the world is seeing and hearing (or not) at every time. Having conversation in front of the camera must not be done.
Third: Reports of break out session must be made directly in a wiki, with instructions to the viewers that they can't edit, but they can add comments to the discussion (as it was done when the WOSonOS took place in Denmark some years ago). This can easily be done from free wiki site providers.
Fourth: a reporter must be assigned to make written and/or graphic reports to be displayed daily in the same wiki, or in a linked blog – with photos and videos (from the streaming) also available for the ones that can´t connect synchronously.

Due to the special characteristics of the UK group that is inviting the 2012 WOSonOS, I think that all this suggestions will be easily done by them - if they accept the concept...

I'm so happy with the news here that I feel I must share a bit of it with this community that brings so much joy and light to my life: the same day that Wosonos started in Olmué, 20-X-2011 we had great news for celebration in the other coin of the world:

What is OST?

It is a highly effective, participant-led process that has been described as the most powerful leadership and meeting approach for the 21^stcentury.

For it is a way to rapidly increase participation, equality, engagement, inclusion, ownership, and energy for change within your organisation, community or project.

These happen as it enables groups to identify critical issues, voice their passions and concerns, learn from each other, and take collective responsibility for finding solutions.

While being a process, practice and philosophy that is flexible and strong enough to work with a few people or with thousands, for a few hours or over several days or more.

In what contexts is OST of particular value?

a real issue of concern, a lot of caring about the issue and a lot at stake (personally or collectively; a reason for meeting that resonates embodied by a theme)
a high level of complexity (an issue to tackle that is bigger than any single individual or small group)
a real passion, caring a lot about the situation or issue
diversity (diversity in thinking, diversity in being open or in other words not rehashing the same stuff with the same people; a true interest in fully engaging, listening and speaking)
a spirit of invitation (you don't have to come but we'd love you to come and we'd want you there because you have a lot to contribute); and if you do decide to come, it's because you have passion and care enough to take responsibility and are making the commitment to be there the whole time
an open dialogue with the sponsor and host team in the pre-work about self-organization, how Open Space is not your typical predict-control model geared to a defined outcome, not your traditional facilitation, and not the oft way of leading when someone is expected to inspire, have all the answers or make the final decisions.

Hi dear friends!

I´m very grateful to have a daily 150 min train traject and spend the mornings underworking in my official workplace (what means that I spend quite much of it surfing the net and sharing through twitter and blogs... ).... And I tend to print some pieces for the train traject.

This was the case of HO´s August Morning piece: http://openspaceworld.com/August%20Morning.pdf It was a delight to read it, half yesterday afternoon, half today morning. Thanks so much, Irene, thx so much Harrison :-)!

I had a small comment after reading ho´s piece, but for now and to keep this msg short, I just must reacknowledge that reading the oslist is always so enriching,... and I can´t stop thanking also Suzanne, Chris and Spark for their pieces that I´m reprinting here...

Carl Gustav Jung was eighty-four years old when he was interviewed for the BBC series, Face-to-Face, in October of 1959. At the time, he was the world’s greatest living psychologist. Founder of Analytical Psychology and originator of the concept of the Collective Unconscious.

John Freeman's probing interview with the 'worlds greatest Psychiatrist' Carl Jung, on the BBC program Face to Face. Provides us a very rare glimpse into the Swiss psychiatrist's personal viewpoints and sheds insight into a little his pioneering work.

Face to Face was the first program on British television to unmask public figures and show what lies beneath the surface. Harsh lighting and close-up camera angles were employed to capture each flicker of emotion, a method critics referred to as "torture by television." Among those who submitted to Freeman's remorseless scrutiny were Evelyn Waugh, Henry Moore, Bertrand Russell, and Carl Gustav Jung.

When Carl Jung consented to be interviewed, the medical community was surprised that this very private figure was suddenly willing to allow an interviewer into his personal space. When the program was first aired in 1959, Jung himself was taken aback at the unexpectedly positive response from the general public. This strong interest in his work inspired Jung to write his final work, Man and His Symbols, his theory of the symbolism of dreams, explained in lay terms so as to be accessible to all who would come seeking answers.

Years ago I took this idea to Google News, but the clever programmers on site at the time told me that the technology needed for what we wanted to achieve did not exist. But we were determined to make it happen. So we started thinking about an international optimistic news service, based on a similar model as Wikipedia, with citizen-correspondents contributing from around the world.
Meanwhile, in early 2010, I ran into Tim Musgrove and his semantic search company TextDigger. He immediately seized the opportunity and the concept of OdeWire was born in a Silicon Valley coffee-shop.

Harrison Owen sent yesterday this beautiful piece to the OSLIST.

I don’t know if this fits, but some many years ago I had the privilege of spending some time in the African Bush with some wonderful people. I think this was my first awareness of open space (Open Space?). Anyhow I wrote about it and it went like this (in my first book, “When the Devil Dances” and I should add that the Devil is not the familiar figure with long horns but rather the missionaries mistaken appellation for a central actor in village life.)

Some weeks ago we returned to the ever interesting subject of education, home schooling in our radio interviews (in Basque, listen here to Madalen Goiria). Ibon Burgoa, our great technician was inspired once more to select this brilliant piece by Malvina Reynolds. Opening Space for Peace in the Basque Country

A one day event to close the doctorate thesis os Xabier Mínguez, directed by Ramón Alzate.

Lots of energy and vibration moved.
Start of a big change in plenty of the participants, as stated in the closing circle.
Wonderful bright day. Participants (more than 98% fist timers) taking some circles outdoors,...
The event was kept quite underground to avoid press and the stuff to guarantee intimacy.
Great confidence for speaking in a climate where such conversations (specially with strangers) are very uncommon.
At the end the group decided that the proceedings could be published wherever. Fear was supposed to be a potential factor not to publish them, but in the closing circle someone said: "Fear? The only fear we have would be fear not to have them published!" This statement was followed by an outburst of laughter...

OS, other techniques & facilitators (longish)

I write a message to the OSLIST (2011 feb 11) on facilitation techniques and had some interesting feedback. These lines are the mixture of both. First message is in green. I tried to organise the pieces of the answers the best I could. I painted magenta the pieces that resonated strongest in myself. The thread even inspired a poem in Chris Corrigan that I'm copying in this other post. Hope this "proceedings" are helpful to you. I still am dubious about using/learning other techniques (unless one day I get delighted with a text or experience that really gets me convinced). Probably I'll keep singing, and try to spend more time in nature, just listening,...

Optimal circumstances for OS are:

clear, hot topic
complex issues
diverse participants
passion and potential conflict
urgence...

As weaker these characteristics are OS seems to work worse. So, as less such circumstances exist...Is it worth or really needed any kind of formal gathering?

'OS doesn´t work worse' if those particular characteristics are not there.

(Good news for me from Lisa.)

Or should we just let the organization self manage everyday?

There´s a much more open space for OS:

"I violate those "optimal circumstances" daily and am always glad I did.

Open Space always seems to bring out the "REAL" in people (best and worst), and so I find that even in less "urgent" circumstances, important things get done:

Deepens relationships
Solves problems you might not have known exist

I haven't yet found a time when Open Space hasn't served all participants well :-)"

Open Space can be used for knowledge sharing; coworking: designing an airplane door.

for unpacking the wisdom in a group to help them do their jobs in a way that has more impact and interconnectedness; and many other things. ...'OS doesn´t work worse' if those particular characteristics are not there.

People know Spirit Moves Mountain.

I use OS because It Moves That Mountain while other human-facilitated approaches don't seem to be able to work that magic with so much simplicity.

So, I'd rather continue to fully enjoy letting it move mountains.

Somehow the entire Universe seems to give us an answer whenever we humbly ask how it works.

I still wonder: in which circumstance that one could use OS would you rather another type of facilitation?

Myself I know very few about other techniques.

I had 2 World Café experiences. After both of them I felt that an OS event would have fitted and done the job much better. It felt like something just halfway anyhow,....
Your World Cafe experiences - it may have been like when we see something called OS that was not really OS, or was the wrong timing or time span or the facilitator saw the visible process but had not explored what is behind it - you know?
I was also told some stories about Appreciative Inquiry
So World Cafe is a great tool but like OS - learning deeply about the art of the question and about that tool is to me really important before one uses it. I have seen it deliver great things in short time frames - like 2 hours to open up what is the data / the collective experience in the room. Many of these participant-driven dialogue tools are also used to open up ideas - then there are other really interactive processes for folks to cluster their thinking, reflect on it, see what it says to them and so on. So these tools are not always done in isolation but as part of a larger design - including sometimes several kinds of meetings for moving thoughts or projects forward, if appropriate.

Question for the people that know about and use other facilitation techniques... would you recomnend any resources that inform about them in a general way? That suggest such techniques for such circumstances,...?

Ralph Stacey’s / Brenda Zimmerman’s Agreement-Certainty Matrix sheds some light on this.

When there is a high level of certainty about what will happen and agreement about what to do...go ahead and execute

When there is uncertainty about what will happen and what to do....the situation is complex and self-organizing / Open Space is idealy suited

When you’re far from certain and far from agreement your likely in the land of chaos.....where seeing what patterns are emerging through strategic sensitivity / and action taking might help make sense of the emerging patterns. (Usually all the characteristics you describe for optimal OS are naturally present in these situations)

Now I have a hunch our good friend Harrison would say all three of these activities are self-organizing and I would be hard pressed to argue that.

I do not feel you have to have a million tools to get business or to sell anything. But I do believe that it is important to learn the tools you feel you like - learn them very well. If you find a situation calls for something that you yourself do not do, it is such a wonderful opportunity for you to refer the work to a respected colleague who does those other things. You don't have to know and do everything, right?

There are wonderful participant-driven tools and processes for groups in addition to OS - using graphics, inquiry, movement, appreciative inquiry, kinesthetic modeling, mapping, storytelling and more.

I am guessing that if you love OS for what it brings to / out of a group you will love learning about these other similar tools and process as well.

Dialogue with each other, dialogue within one's self, dialogue with one's body and other senses, dialogue with Mother Earth and nature, dialogue with the unknown and unknowable..

...which is also about...listening....

I use all of them - OS, World Cafe, and Appreciative Inquiry, plus a bunch of others such as focus groups, quality improvement process, and sometimes straight-forward clear agenda-driven business meetings. I think each has its place depending on the objectives.

World cafe (or Knowledge Cafe) is a series of facilitated conversations for knowledge sharing on a topic typically pre-determined for the participants
Appreciative Inquiry is a philosophy and an approach to organizational development that emphasizes not solving the problems of the organization but amplifying what's best (the strengths) about the organization.
These tools all aim at encouraging dialogues and unleashing the positive energy of people although OST is probably the most organic and least directive.

One of the lessons I learned from OST is that we should not assume there is one person who knows the best way (the best question to ask, best process to go through, or best group of people to work on) - to resolve an issue or improve anything. This humility is a crucial step in opening the door of wisdom. I used to rely on myself a lot as a facilitator thinking I had to come up with the "right" process or a well-designed intervention to guide people to a solution. A page was turned for me as now I believe as long as we hold the space, respect people's free will, and trust the process, the group's collective wisdom is much more powerful than my own little brain.

OS as a process, an attitude, and a mind-set. It says "let it be." I can take that "let it be" spirit to any sessions I facilitate and turn it loose whenever I see the need for a rich and deep dialogue.

Complementary
They can work together. For example, we can open space to discuss what's great about our organization (Appreciative Inquiry) and how to leverage our strengths to create further success. On the other hand, I can see the potential of misusing these tools when the assumptions and expectations don't match

Maybe the comfort of staying so is pulling me to have this simplistic view :-)?

Sometimes it seems as if a facilitator should have more services to offer the client to "get a business", but in this case, wouldn´t one rather complement his/her own life with other stuff she really believes in and enjoys (...you got it, like singing !!! : -)

I CAME FROM FAR AWAY

This piece came through my heart and voice in the Closing Circle of the "Open Space for Higher Purpose" Learning Experience on January the 17th. STARTING THE UNDERGROUND W-CO!NSPIRATION :-)

This draft was started in NYC, during the Open Space for High Performance and Peace Learning Experience the 14^th Jan 2011. Suzanne&Eleder (both in the photo, having co-written the first draft of this post) Terri, Caitlin, Karen, Harrison, Chino, Greg, and many more took part in conversations that inspired these piece.

Are you an underground mayor (UM) of your place? Someone that plays politics in a joyful way; probably out of the political parties but being in touch with people engaged in all the parties? Someone that loves conversation and would need an hour´s time to walk half a mile in her neighbourhood? Prone to dream up the craziest ways to get us all to a more joyful way of living?

Yes, kind of? Sure, you really are an UM (underground mayor -preferred to unofficial-) of your place and have been so for years. Now you come to know that a term was coined (first heard to Greg Rivera addressing myself :-) for it, you finally get a sense of belonging, and are now eager to spread the word. This makes quite a difference because you´ll be conscious from now on and the idea will start its own life.

We have probably also UPs of the world (term coined by brilliant Caitlin Nisos-Atlanta): they have the same way to play politics, but they play in a wider area, not necessarily their everyday walking distance area. They move quite much by plane. Myself I´m also a UP of the world, I was told, concerned with food, public space usage, creativity, de-electified fun,… but act mainly as UM, considering it a more comfortable and easier way of being.

Organic growing: by the way, how can the word be spread in a minimal effort way? I suppose that starting a w-platform and so would imply too much work and would be counter-underground. Maybe that just having people knowing about it, mainly through oral informal conversations and just a little organic presence in the net, just people that like the idea most keeping lists of mates around the world, signing e-mails with the term, keeping some links related to it listed,… something like so would be enough.

Openness: Maybe you still don't realize that you really are one of us, but you sure know some of them. Let them, us & the world know, please! There are, sure, some 87.349 UMs in NYC, same as we are some 12.739 in Bilbao... We are a growing government :-)! How many UMs in your town?

Voluntary responsibility: it´s oneself who comes to know about the term and says, “oh, yes, I´m a UM of my town, city, neighbourhood,…” and starts to state it wherever, when told the story.

No salary: but maybe we one day start paying a symbolic fee for the U-mayordom to fund some funnily interesting experiment/people/stuff …

SUNNI BROWN (Gamestorming): Visual Thinking and Facilitation. Course(s) in Bilbao (and near) soon

Do you want to collaborate in the organization of this great meet-up?

Sunni Brown, author of Gamestorming will be spending some months in Paris and we are organizaing a workshop on her expertise. Some thoughts regarding it...

1. A 4 morning or evening course could be good. Incubating time in between meet-ups is usually helpful. Maybe Tu, Th, Fr, Sa ; maybe better Fr-eve, Sa, Su, Th or so,... we'll see. We could arrange the accomodations in homes of the organizing time, quite sure.

2. First it'll be to find some support and people interested in it. It's my first time in this kind of mediation business... As Sunni says, where there is a will there is a way. Good!

3. Potential attendees we´re thinking about...

Creativity
Innovation
Media & Publishing
Education
Art (people looking for other business opportunities)

4. We asked Sunni a short note on the kind of workshop she would offer. Any other suggestions from anyone reading this post will also be so welcome, sure!

5. Collaboration: we could ourselves run a part of the workshop regarding mind mapping (we have some expertise in it). We could also translate parts, but I think it best having it for English speaking/understanding people -not so usual here-. It would be a pity losing Sunni´s humour and the momentum through translations,...

We´ll keep on with this dream-idea and let you know if sth flourishes...

I really like the Unintended Muse. The iPad and the plunger make a nice couple. Reminds me of Red Green: "If the girls don't find you handsome, they better find you handy." The trick here is to find a connection that doesn't suck. Who would have ever thought of propping up their plunger with an iPad. What does a plunger and an ipad have in common, and why would anyone want to prop up their plunger anyway? Hmm... "I" one a handle and the other a name. That's why I'm a creative genius, don't even try. Now I can go to bed, thanks Marc.

TRIP TO NEW YORK: OS Learning Experience and NYLBAO project

Harrison Owen wrote recently to the OSLIST to announce an OS learning session in NY:

Karen Davis, Ralph Copleman and Harrison Owen will be hosting an OS Learning Experience in New York between January the 14th and the 17th. It will be a good place to learn about Open Space, but that is just the beginning, the appetizer so to speak. The Main Course takes us into the world of application – and more specifically – How to enable Peace and High Performance for ourselves and our organizations. For all the details check out here...

I´m a long follower and starting facilitator of Open Space facilitator and after several events, the most recent of which I informed about here, and having taken part in Wosonos Berlin 2010, it´s a good moment for me for learning from the most experienced. So I bought my plane tickets and reserved a place to sleep (here, about a mile from the venue, in International House).

Last news (Jan 3): Today I contacted through Sunni Brown with New York City VizThink people and we are planning to gather in one of their regular meet-ups, good news, really :-)!

I plan staying in NY January 11-18 and we´ll have some free days before the OS Learning Experience.As it´ll be my first time in the US and I´d like to know a bit about NYC through local people. I thought to try something that ensembles my passions and the people of the place. It could be an experiment called "NYC: passion, people and places".

It is not so long since I met my friend Greg Rivera in Bilbao and after having quite quickly felt him as a near-minded guy, we started to kid about NYLBAO project in our playful minds. A link between New York, the big and so admired city and Bilbao, our small city in South Europe through experiments involving community, education, art and the likes. Is fate making it real? We just enjoy keeping dreaming and playing...

Now I´d like you to think about any connections you have to NYC and involve you in this game: "NYC: passion, people and places". I love knowing new places and I love meeting new people and chatting and mainly listening to people´s stories (specially in my no so fluent English ;-).

So, I´m looking for some people who will be in NYC between January 11-18 and would like to meet just to conversate for a while in a place they love in NYC... Simple plan that, as OS itself, can open interesting and healing space for great emergence.

Be prepared to get surprised ;-)!

Those are some of the subjects I´m most interested in: work that matters/unjobbing; Open Space (sure!) and its apliccation to life; creativity; simple living; humour; community art; urban permaculture; city byking.... but I like overall listening to people that talk from their heart, about their hot topics/subects...

This trip to NYC invites me also to try again some singing in the street, in a similar way as we did in Bilbao some months ago. Want to watch the v-card we made?

Can you identify friends or acquaintances in NYC who would probably enjoy a long talk with someone sharing interests? If so, let me know, please, and let´s open a bit of space...
